In the United States, the central unresolved question we have is how to tell the story of who we are.

The answer is not simply through a study of civics, laws, and norms. The arts—images, culture, performance—have long been a way to work through the blind spots of norms and laws that did not honor the full humanity of all those who live in this extraordinary country.

The answer, in representational democracy, has always been through representation itself.
